Why
Mozambique???
The Current Situation-
Mozambique, with
a population of 17 million
people, is one of the
worlds poorest nations.
Averages of 600 to 700
people a day become infected
with HIV. |

This
impoverished nation was
still struggling to recover
from catastrophic floods
in 2000 and earlier in
2001 when hundreds of
thousands of people were
devastated again by even
more flooding.
1,000,000 people are still
facing a serious threat
of starvation. Some are
barely surviving by eating
wild fruit. The situation
is expected to worsen
in coming months.

| | Street
Children Because
of tragic loss of life
through war, disease and
a series of flooding,
many children have been
orphaned or turned out
on the street to beg.
Children under the age
of 15 are working as farm
laborers, street vendors
and prostitutes. Some
children as young as eight
or nine years old are
lured from their villages
with promises of work
in the homes and restaurants
of neighboring south Africa
and Zimbabwe. The girls
are instead forced to
work in Brothels serving
old men who mistakenly
think that the younger
prostitutes are not yet
infected with HIV/AIDS.
The child mortality rate
is 58%, with many children
dying from diarrhea, parasites,
malnutrition, malaria
and sexually transmitted
diseases. Due to the food
shortage, starvation will
grow as one of the leading
causes of death to Mozambique's
children. 500,000 are
presently homeless.
How to Help
Strategic intervention
is needed. One must work
through the Christians
in faithful churches.
A large influx of non-focused
aid would not go very
far and would affect
only a few people. However,
training local leadership
will bring much needed
improvement to aid distribution. |
