PROGRAM SUMMARY

This report presents the emergency food relief operation carried out in Mozambique in response to severe flooding and crop destruction affecting vulnerable communities in Manica Province and the southern region (Maputo / Matola).

The intervention aimed to provide immediate food assistance, spiritual care, and full accountability to donors.

PROJECT SCOPE

Program: $5,000 Feeding Program – 250 People

Duration: 30 Days

Target: 50 Families (Approximately 250 People)

Locations: Chimoio, Ahamatanda, Buzi, and Matola (Maputo Province)

Distance Covered: Over 1,200 km

BENEFICIARIES

Distributions were focused on families in extreme vulnerability, including:

• Orphans

• Widows

• Elderly

• People with disabilities

• Flood victims with total loss of crops and homes

To maintain dignity, safety, and order, distributions were conducted in groups of 15 families at a time, preventing disorder due to severe hunger conditions.

OPERATIONAL FLOW

• Local bulk purchase of staple foods

• Assembly of 50 family food kits (approx. 45 kg each)

• Transportation to remote communities (200+ km routes)

• Community-based organized distribution

• Prayer, pastoral care, and encouragement

• Full documentation, reporting, and miscellaneous logistics

BUDGET

$5,000 Feeding Program – 250 People – Mozambique

Duration: 30 Days | Target: 50 Families (Approx. 250 People)

Objective:

To provide a basic, high-calorie and protein-rich survival food kit for 50 vulnerable families, covering food purchase, handling, transportation (200 km), organized distribution, and miscellaneous operational expenses.

Emergency Food Relief Budget – Mozambique (50 Families)

1. Food Kits (50 families)

Maize meal, beans, cooking oil, dried fish, sugar, salt

Total: $4,200

(Beans and dried fish purchased in local open markets; receipts not available.)

2. Transportation (200 km)

Truck rental, fuel, driver, helper, and incidentals

Total: $1,250

3. Handling & Logistics

Bags, weighing, temporary storage, team meals, communication

Total: $200

4. Contingency Reserve

Price fluctuations and emergency needs

Total: $100

5. Currency Conversion Loss (USD → MZN)

Estimated bank fees and exchange spread (approx. 5% on $5,000)

Estimated Loss: $250

TOTAL PROGRAM COST: $6,000

Explanation:

Although $5,750 represents the operational costs on the ground, international transfers from USD to Mozambican Metical incur an average loss of approximately 5% due to bank fees and exchange rate spread. To ensure the full operational amount is available for food purchase, transport, and distribution, an additional $250 must be accounted for, bringing the total fundraising target to $6,000.

ADDITIONAL OPERATIONAL COSTS (NOT ORIGINALLY ITEMIZED)

In addition to the main budget categories, essential miscellaneous expenses were incurred, including:

• Support for local volunteers and ministry workers

• Long-distance travel to southern Mozambique (Matola / Maputo Province)

• Basic accommodation and subsistence for the team

• Emergency local transportation during vehicle breakdowns

These costs were indispensable to ensure safe, organized, and timely access to remote and severely affected communities.

FIELD PRESENCE

Eddie & Vilma Brito were personally present in almost all distributions, overseeing logistics, praying with families, and ensuring correct delivery to the most vulnerable.

SITUATION ON THE GROUND

When we arrived in the affected communities, we were confronted with a reality that went far beyond statistics. Hunger was no longer just a number in a report — it had faces, names, tears, and silence. Entire families had lost their crops, their food reserves, and in many cases, their homes. The heavy rains and floods did not only destroy the land; they stripped people of security, dignity, and immediate hope.

We encountered children with hollow eyes from lack of food, elderly people too weak to stand for long, and mothers trying to comfort their children with nothing to put in the cooking pot. Many were going to sleep at night without eating, trusting only that the next day might bring some provision. Local pastors wept with us, saying they were watching their congregations suffer with no resources to help. Government authorities acknowledged the severity of the crisis, but also the limitations of available support.

Yet, in the midst of pain, something remained alive: faith. Among the mud, damaged homes, nearly impassable roads, and constant rain, we found people who still prayed and still hoped in God. Every bag of food delivered was not only nourishment — it was a declaration that they had not been forgotten. It was a confirmation that even in the deepest darkness, the Lord continues to raise helping hands to bring relief, comfort, and hope.

This was the great situation: a profound humanitarian crisis marked by loss and suffering, but also by resilient faith and the tangible action of God’s love reaching the most vulnerable at the moment they needed it most.

OPERATIONAL CONTEXT AND FIELD REALITY

We traveled to southern Mozambique, specifically to the Matola region (Maputo Province), covering more than 1,200 km. This marked the final stage of the current food relief operation, as the available funds have now been fully utilized. Torrential rains have severely affected both central and southern Mozambique, leaving countless families without homes, crops, or any immediate means of survival.

Beneficiaries and Organization

Distributions were focused on families in extreme vulnerability. To ensure order, safety, and dignity, each distribution was organized in groups of 15 families at a time (15, then another 15, and so on). This approach was essential to prevent chaos, as hunger in the region is extremely acute. This method allowed us to reach those with absolutely nothing in a responsible and controlled manner.

Field Presence

We were personally present in almost all distributions, handing out food, praying with families, and overseeing each stage of the process. Being on the ground allowed us to assess real needs and ensure that assistance reached those who needed it most.

Local Partnerships

We worked in cooperation with Independent Baptist Churches, Assemblies of God, and other local Christian communities, as well as with Projeto Cidadão, a long-standing partner with whom we share a relationship of trust, accountability, and transparency.

Logistics and Challenges

During the operation, our vehicle broke down, forcing us on several occasions to continue the work without our own transport and to rely on local means of travel (“chapas” — overcrowded and unsafe minibuses). Even so, with the support of our partners and complete dependence on God, we were able to continue reaching the planned communities, often departing very early in the morning.

Reality on the Ground

The situations we encountered were deeply moving: families who lost everything to floods, destroyed small farms, and children and elderly with no food reserves at all. They are truly “the poorest of the poor.” Alongside the pain, we also witnessed faith, gratitude, and renewed hope as people received food and prayer.
